13th May- We have two last minute special offers on the week of 24th July to 31st July and the week of 28th August to 4th September. The price is now an incredible 2,500 euros.
1st May- The shops in Lucca are all closed for the 1st May holiday.
30th April 2010- Notte Bianca in Florence, Restaurants and shops open all night also street entertainment and markets . The Uffizi Gallery is open until midnight and the Palazzo Vecchio always and free .
2th to 25th April 2010- The flower market in honour of Santa Zita, Lucca’s Robin hood. Santa Zita was a housemaid who took food from her employer but also gave her own food to the poor. Her employers were benign and indeed she was promoted as she was a good person and hard worker unlike her fellow servants. Flowers are all over the piazza in front of the church of St Frediano where her remains are honoured. The market is in the anfiteatro and for me this occasion hails the start of the warm weather as everyone buys there plants for their terraces.
20th April 2010- With all the plane cancellation due to the volcanic ash cloud I thought some lateral thinking was required and I would have another look at alternative travel arrangements to Tuscany. Train and car are the most obvious choices. Train from London and all of Europe is easy and not that expensive. Children under 4 go free and there are no luggage surcharges or two hour check in time. You can take a Eurostar to Paris and then a sleeper to Florence. All the information on how you book and routes can be found on www.seat61.com/Italy . Driving is also easy. For example London to Benabbio can be done even with small children with one overnight stop. Google maps can give you alternative routes and journey times. European visitors don’t have the problem of the channel but there is always the choice of tunnels or passes. In the summer the drive over the top of the passes is beautiful. Ferries can also be taken from Spain, Greece and Turkey as well as Tunisia. As our guests at Easter said their drive was part of the holiday and the children saw it as an adventure. The Volcanic ash may just be a wonderful excuse for the return of the romance of travel, think of Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face.
16th -26th April 2010- With all the Italian cultural week -all state museums freehttp://www.seat61.com/Italyshapeimage_14_link_0
